The Heritage Institute of Technology was established in 2001 under the aegis of Kalyan Bharti Trust. The trust aims to promote technical education and research in the field of engineering and technology.

HIT is affiliated with the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT). The college is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and has received accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

HIT offers undergraduate (B.Tech), postgraduate (M.Tech), and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in various engineering disciplines. The undergraduate programs include branches such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Information Technology, and Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering.

Admissions to the undergraduate programs at HIT are based on the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) rank. Candidates need to appear for WBJEE and qualify to be eligible for admission. The college also accepts candidates through the Joint Entrance Examination-Main (JEE Main) scores. For postgraduate programs, admissions are based on GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores or through the state-level entrance examination.
